He replaces Corbin as my third character
Name: Nanashi
Age: 28
Race: Human
Physical Description:
Original by Cyberarts1st here Thanks a lot for allowing me to use it
Nanashi stands at 5.9” and has a lean, athletic build. His muscles are slightly pronounced and he carries himself nimbly and gracefully, obviously the type that prefers agility and dexterity over brute force. Several locks of his dark, brownish red and disheveled hair fall over his face, and in the back he has it tied into a short, unkempt ponytail. His amber colored eyes where often being described as golden and thought off as a sign of good fortune, as gold was the color of the gods.
Despite no longer living in his home country, he still tries to stick to the clothing he brought with him as he finds it most comfortable. His black, sleeveless gi and wide, dark blue pants, which stop about halfway of his lower legs, are somewhat tattered from all the wear and tear.
His haori, the traditional jacket like gi, falls to slightly over his knees. Like the gi, it is also sleeveless and has most definitely seen better days. The grey color has started to fade, and the symbol on the back is almost indiscernible.
His black, two toed socks (tabi) still look somewhat decent, as do the traditional straw sandals he uses. The conical straw hat is also still rather good looking. Aside from the cut in the front which he hasn’t had time to repair yet.
The white, tattered belt around his waist, also holds his sword. Which is the only item he can honestly say is still in tip top shape. Both the scabbard and the katana itself are in excellent condition. Tied to the circular cross guard and scabbard, is a single, white ribbon that prevents him from drawing the sword.
Personality:
Carefree, lazy and accident prone is how people describe him. Always good natured and polite, despite his insane amount of bad luck. At time he can be frustrated by this, but he has accepted that it is his lot in life to suffer. He tries to not get involved in too much trouble as his bad luck gets him in enough trouble as it is, but he is not indifferent to the suffering of others. Preferring to solve things peacefully, he only draws his sword as a last resort.
His language skills are somewhat poor, and thus he still has trouble speaking the language. This often causes him to mix in words from his native tongue and he speaks with a thick accent. All the bad luck he has makes people think he is clumsy and combined with his carefree attitude, it causes people to underestimate him, both in terms of fighting skills and intelligence.
Neither should be underestimated however, as he is highly intelligent, observant and analytical. Traits that serve him well both in and out of combat.
He longs to go home, but knows it is too dangerous to do so. The last ship he set foot on nearly sank thanks to the bad luck he attracts after all. So instead, he is now wandering this strange country, seeking a purpose in life. And maybe, just maybe, a way to repent for the actions he committed during the war in his home country.
History:
Born on the island empire of Nippon, he was given the name Hayato upon his birth. His father was a proud warrior of the warrior caste, the highest possible social standing anyone without noble blood could possibly attain. In the country of Nippon, they counted years of age in sets of four, and all important stages of one’s life could be traced to them.
At his fourth birthday, the start of his second four, he began his training in the arts deemed important. Horse riding, archery, swordsmanship, etiquette, calligraphy, etc. etc.. At the fourth four, his coming of age ceremony was held. Together with the other boys that had been summoned he fought in the proving grounds, the holy Jikkenjou.
The Jikkenjou was held to showcase their skill and talent. It was here, that they had to convince one of the masters watching to take them under their wing and thus earning their place among the warrior caste. Talented as he was, Hayato fought brilliantly and one of the Shogun’s most renowned masters decided to accept him.
He had performed so well, the Shogun himself descended from his seat to present him with his katana and name. A truly incredible and rare honor. From that day forward, he was named Heihachi, a proud member of clan Takeda. Shortly after the Jikkenjou however, war broke out. A gruesome war that later came to be known as the War of Four, as it lasted four years.
Serving under his Lord with pride, Heihachi soon acquired a reputation amongst friend and foe alike for his great prowess in battle and unquestionable honor. Raised to believe his sword was to protect the weak and what he believed in, it pained him to see his ideals shattered by war.
After the war was over, and the power and influence of the warrior caste destroyed, Heihachi did not accept the offer of a high ranked position within the new imperial army. Like many warriors who clung to the old way, he became an honor less and nameless wanderer, a nanashi. Vowing, that from that day on, he would seek to atone for the deaths he caused during the war.
Especially considering the life he used to have, being a nanashi was rough. No one respected the nameless wanderers and few dared trusting the often violent warriors that could not adept to the new era of peace. Eventually, his travels led him to a remote mountain village, terrorized by bandits. Former warriors that had truly lost their way.
His sword broke during a fight with two of them, as he protected the family that had been kind enough to provide him with food and shelter. Taking the youngest daughter, their leader challenged Heihachi to a duel, as he remembered him from the war. Killing the Red Tiger of clan Takeda would be his greatest victory.
Upon realizing Heihachi was going after them without a sword, the people of the village reluctantly told him of a shrine deep within the mountains. The blade of Kyoujikami was supposed to be enshrined within. There were legends surrounding that blade, but no one in the village could remember them.
Realizing it was his only chance, he set off to find it. After finally locating the shrine, he was surprised at how well maintained it looked, despite being abandoned for years. Upon taking hold of the katana within, he lost consciousness and had a vision.
A beautiful woman, who introduced herself as Kyoujikami, told him that only one who accepted being her chosen could take the blade. In response, Heihachi told her that in return for a weapon and the chance to fulfill his promise of saving the girl, he would agree. Of course, it was only much later that he realized he had become the chosen of a deity of misfortune…
Miraculously, he managed to save her. Despite all of the sudden bad luck he was having. Soon after he found the source of his constant misfortune. Desperately, he tried to get rid of the source, his sword, but being the deity’s chosen this was not so easy.
Even if he separated himself from the blade, her power lingered long enough to invariably cause the blade to return to his hands by accident. So long as he would have the blade, he would be cursed with bad luck. So long as he had bad luck, he would not be able to rid himself of the blade.
Eventually, he accepted a job to protect a ship en route to Valear. Sadly, he naturally met with misfortune and the entire ship nearly sank. After finally making it through the arduous journey, he decided it would be safer to stay in Valear. There he tried to explain being “a” nanashi and thus having no name, but the people of Valear did not seem to understand, thinking nanashi was his name. Eventually he stopped correcting people and became known as Nanashi, the wandering swordsman with a chronic case of bad luck.
Skills and abilities
Pain tolerance
Thanks to him getting clobbered by all sorts of things daily, he has build up quite a tolerance to pain by now.
Swordsmanship
Nanashi is an excellent swordsman. Having trained in the art from the age of four and having studied under one of the best sword masters available in the empire he is a force to be reckoned with. Amongst his peers who joined the Lords army with him, he was undefeated in single combat.
Even with the amount of bad luck he has, he can still compete with the best of them. One might even say that he has such an amount of raw skill, that it easily compensates the penalty he receives from his spells of bad luck.
Kyoujikami
The deity trapped in Nanashi’s sword bestows upon him four divine powers, or Shinryoku. Three of them are passive, the final one has to be invoked.
Kyoujikami no megumi (Kyoujikami’s grace)
The first of the four Shinryoku. Since it is so hard to find a suitable chosen, she will use her power to at least try and protect him. Instead of being killed, he might trip and hurt his head badly for example. She cannot outright protect him as she has to cause at least some bad luck. But hey, hurting your head beats losing it.
Kyoujikami no tenshin (Kyoujikami’s providence)
the second Shinryoku is having misfortune befall the bearer of the blade in which Kyoujikami is sealed. Being a deity of misfortune, it is in her nature to cause bad luck and misfortune.
Kyoujikami no shakusen (Kyoujikami’s debt)
The third passive power bestowed upon one chosen by Kyoujikami. Every time Nanashi gets hit by bad luck, in other words, when the second Shinryoku works its magic, he builds up favor with her. He has taken to calling it karma.
Kyoujikami no ongaeshi (Kyoujikami’s repayment)
The final Shinryoku and the only one of the four that needs to be invoked. By releasing the seal on the blade, Kyoujikami is free to unleash all the karma stored by the third Shinryoku. This will grant him unbelievable luck. Luck of such magnitude it could even be called miracles.
Nanashi however, cannot spend it himself and is thus still depended on Kyoujikami’s whims. Also, it takes more karma to manifest good luck, then bad luck of the same magnitude will give. Once unsealed, the power will stay in effect until Nanashi has run out of stored karma, or reseals Kyoujikami.
