Name: Valencia – most folks call her Val
Age: Somewhere around 160 but appears in her late teens by human standards
Gender: Female
Race: Spirit fox
Height: 5 foot 5
Weight: 120
Physical Description:
Val is rather petite, her height and weight both a little less than average. She looks basically human save for the fox ears and tail that give away what she is, yet she makes no effort to hide them. Her hair reaches the middle of her back, sometimes pulled into a high ponytail, and is a vivid red color. Ears and tail are the same shade. A few odd silver streaks are visible both in her hair and tail. Her emerald green eyes stand out amongst all this red and have a friendly sparkle to them. Her clothes usually consist of a black long-sleeved turtleneck and black pants and shoes.
There are a few instances when Val takes on a different appearance. When she goes “feral,” her eye color shifts to a blood red and the silver in her hair and tail disappears. Her fangs also become much more prominent, as do her claws. If she is pushed far enough she will take on the form of a two-tailed fox, about the size of a lion with fiery red-orange fur (it doesn’t happen a lot – only if the ones threatening her refuse to back down).
Personality:
Normally Val is a very sweet and caring individual – perhaps a little too much so, according to some folks. Some have said that her demeanor seems fake, but rest assured that such a thing is not true. While she won’t exactly go out of her way to interact with or help someone, she won’t turn her back on a person, either. If it’s within her power and doesn’t make her uncomfortable, she’ll do what she can to aid someone who might need it.
Her naivete and trusting nature have gotten her into a lot of trouble in the past. So she has developed a “feral side,” which is a defense mechanism of sorts against another’s ill intentions. It first kicked in when she was much younger and has since then been her only form of defense. The only problem is that she doesn’t differentiate friend from foe in that state and is completely unaware of it when it happens. Therefore she can’t understand why – after she goes feral – the people around her are suddenly afraid of her and chase her out of town.
She’s been chased out and hunted down so many times that she’s become a little timid and quiet over the years until she’s been acquainted with someone a short while. Once she feels they won’t turn on her, she begins to open up a bit. If she’s really comfortable with someone, she can get a little goofy and giddy and loosen up enough to joke with that person.
On the whole, Val is rather soft-spoken and has a very gentle nature. Oh, and she’s an absolute sucker for kids – especially human kids – and animals. Due to an event in her younger years, she’s uneasy around large groups of human adult men.
Powers/Strengths:
--Has the ability to create and control fire, both in her normal and feral state, though at the moment she is unaware of it. Uses it quite often when feral.
--Strong senses of smell and hearing.
--Though not the best at handling her own problems, she’s a good listener and has a knack for talking others through their issues.
--Has a little medical know-how, but it’s mostly just the basics. She does, though, know quite a lot about herbal remedies (bits and pieces of knowledge she’s picked up here and there).
Weaknesses:
--Though Val can fight and defend herself while in her feral state, it’s more of a weakness than a strength. She is unaware of what she does when she gets like this, and many times she has done things she would never do normally.
--No combat or weapons training whatsoever. At this point, the only way she can truly defend herself is when her feral instincts kick in.
--Has a bad habit of jumping to conclusions too soon, especially regarding folks’ negative behavior towards her. If someone starts behaving differently towards her she’ll automatically assume she did something wrong and just leave to avoid further problems.
--Far too naive and unassuming of strangers. She chooses to believe no one is inherently evil until they prove otherwise. Which is strange, considering what happened in her teenage years.
History:
Val’s life was uneventful until she was eighteen. Until then she had been living a quiet existence with her parents and siblings. A band of thieves posing as a traveling show murdered the parents and Val’s two older brothers, then took the three remaining sisters prisoner.
Because Val’s sisters were younger the human men went after them first, violating and beating them on an almost daily basis. But there was little Val could do – not only could she not fight, but she was kept separate from her sisters. Eventually the youngest was abused so badly that she died, and the second sister stopped putting up a fight.
There was no fun to be had in abusing someone who wouldn’t fight back, so they tried to do the same to Val. Doing so triggered the first feral incident. Once everything was said and done, Val had killed the men who tried to violate her…and unfortunately, her remaining sister was caught in the crossfire. Val ran then, and once the danger was over she passed out. When she awoke it took a while to figure out what had happened. She remembered being attacked and trying to fight back – but as far as she knows beyond that point, she simply escaped. She doesn’t know that she killed the men and her sister.
But so much time has passed now that it doesn’t much matter anymore. Val has tried to keep a quiet existence since then, traveling from place to place and doing what odd jobs she can to support herself. But inevitably something triggers her feral side and she is chased out of town. All she can do when that happens is move on to the next place until the same situation repeats itself.
