Guang nodded and shouldered his pack. It was going to be a pretty tough trek down the mountain in the snow. It was going to be deep in places and if it got too warm too fast, it would be wise to look out for some flash flooding.
"I think we can leave our humble abode," Guang said smiling. He led the way out and looked carefully around. He didn't see anything at first, but saw some birds nearby and they seemed unconcerned.
"Let's go."
***************************
Guang didn't say much on the trek down the mountain. They encountered some pretty easy paths at first and the snow had been blown into drifts, but left smaller paths in the middle. It was more roundabout at points, but it was easier going. At this rate, it would only take a day or so to get down the mountain.
Guang thought about Echo and her search. He wasn't sure what she was going to do or if she would allow him to help. He kept getting the feeling that she was telling him nothing in the hopes that he would forget.
Ironicially, it was harder for him not to care now. He had shared his secret with her and trust usually beget trust. It did not seem to be here and Guang was starting to get somewhat edgy. What if she was a bounty hunter sent from the Selkia? It would be the perfect trap? The better time they made down the mountain, the more Guang worried.
He looked over at her and tried to smile, but it came out as a mockery of a grimace. He turned back to the path and focused on the walk down the mountain. He decided he would just have to be on guard even more now...

Echo noticed that he was silent as they walked down the pathway. During the day, she didn't mind it much. It was harder for her to talk, making excuses and the like. But when she caught his eyes, she noticed his smile seemed strained. Quickly he turned away and she frowned.
She shrugged to herself and continued down the mountain, pondering why Guang seemed so edgy suddenly.
As they finally made it on the outskirts of town she turned to Guang and smirked. The sun was setting, turning the sky above them shades of crimson and orange.
"Well, here we are. You want to get some rooms for tonight? If you want to though we can part ways here." She offered, suddenly looking distant. "It might be better to after all. What I am planning to do is rather dangerous." she laughed a bit.

Guang was even edgier when they reached the bottom of the mountain sooner than he had planned. The snow had thinned out early in the afternoon and it had been pretty decent hiking. They had come to a small village at the base of the mountain...the Selkia only a few dozen feet away.
He was more than shocked when Echo asked about getting rooms. He had figured she would tire of him and hurry to be away or that she would take him into her custody. He was about to apologize when she said that maybe they should part.
"I think it would be a good idea to get a place to stay tonight," Guang said. "We can get a good night's sleep and then part ways tomorrow...if you still want to do that." Guang smiled, a real smile this time, and led the way into town.

Echo smiled lightly. "Sleep does sound good, but I think right now my stomach has other ideas... I haven't eaten a lot for a while." realizing what she said must have sounded odd, she added. "I mean well lets just say I don't eat normal portions." She grinned, trying to hide her unease.
That's a understatement...my normal portions are five bowls of rice, maybe six of stew and a full course meal for five... She sighed to herself softly, thinking about his face as he would see her consume large amounts of food. Her stomach growled, letting her know it was starving.
"Yeah yeah, I'll feed you already." grumbling slightly, Echo made her way to the closest diner. She waved to Guang, 'If you want to get us a room at the Inn next door by all means. It might take me a while to finish eating."

Guang looked at Echo incredulously as she said that she had not eaten much lately. She had eaten most of his rations for the trip he had planned. The food in his satchel should have lasted all the way back to Tamasha, but she had easily cleaned him out. He would have to forage or buy food for the rest of his trek.
Guang watched her leave and headed to the inn just down the street. He went in and got a room, paying for it in advance. The clerk gave him a key and Guang went up to the room. It was dark and dusty as not many people stayed in the small village. Guang put his satchel down and opened a window to get the musty smell out.
"I wonder what that girl is planning," Guang mumbled. He decided that he would go to the diner and see if he couldn't try to find out more about her...and to see if he could help. Shrugging, Guang locked the door and headed down to the diner.
He went inside and saw her sitting by herself, the table laden with food. Guang's eyes went wide as he saw the food on the table. Bemused he walked over and sat down across from her, the food just low enough for him to see her.
"I see you were able to find a few scraps to eat," Guang said, laughing heartily as he sat back in his chair.

Echo stopped in mid bite and grinned a bit. "Yeah I suppose I did." She finally finished eating the last bowl and set it down gently, sighing in relief. Thankfully with this much food she would have the power needed to use her magic without passing out. She paid the bill and stood up. "Well I'm finished. Did you want anything to eat or should we head on out?" She asked him.

Guang just smiled and watched the young lady consuming food. He couldn't believe it all fit inside her small frame. She finished and stood.
"No, I don't need any food. I'm good," he said, still hosting a bemused smile on his face. "I have a room. Please, come with me."
The walk back to the inn was quick, but silent. Guang had a lot of questions, but he had not been very successful at getting Echo to talk to him. He could understand not trusting him at first, but that had been days ago. He was hoping he had made a better impression...and possibly, a friend. He shrugged silently and led the way.
He unlocked the room and let her in first. The air had chilled the room, but the smell was gone. Guang closed the window as Echo lit the lamp.
"You can have the bed," he said. Turning again, Guang went to his pack to get his blanket.
