He was discovered. How rare. However, this spell was unexpected in terms to what it was. He was right - it was pretty simple and cheap. "I was merely observing the spell. I do say that although easy, that spell was done well." He then snapped his fingers - his sight was then enhanced with the execution of that snap. "Worry not; that snap was harmless." Helpful is more like it.

His turn to talk once again. "It is for the same reason a lot of exiled magicians live in graveyards. Exclusion."
It wasn't much, but it answered the question. Hopefully, if this person isn't too rude, he wouldn't ask any more question - however, most people he's seen are in fact, rather rude.
