Kerodi felt the magic of Lethe before he saw it from her hand. When he saw it flood from her hand, he was not scared, but intrigued. A symbol had appeared, but then been overwhelmed by the green hue floating throughout the room. He was concentrating so hard on trying to place the symbol that he only barely registered what she had said.
He shook his head clear and dispensed with the internal magic. She had a point about mending him through the night. And it was obvious that a magic battle here would do no one any good in the long run.
"I know I'm not the only wielder of magic in the world," Kerodi said, standing up straight again. "However, most people are not as attuned to it as you are, being able to feel the force before I show it. You must have powerful magic at your behest. It would be interesting to know more..."
Kerodi shook his head again and walked towards her. "Tea would be fine and maybe something more to eat. My wounds are healing nicely, Lethe, and I appreciate all that you did."
He stopped beside her and grinned. "Can I buy you a cup of tea?"

With a sigh of relief, Lethe lowered her hand. The noxious looking fog dissipated and she gave Kerodi a slight smile. “Why, how could anyone resist such an offer?” Turning around she opened the door while casting a brief glance at the trembling hand on the door knob.
Powerful magic he had called it. The boy had no idea. Yet, powerful as it was, it was also a double edged sword that could easily cut both ways. Balling her hand into a fist as she stepped outside, she swiftly moved downstairs and took a seat.
When her tea arrived, she took a sip before looking at Kerodi. “Well then, now that we can once again discuss matters as civilized beings, where were we? Ah yes. As I told you, feeling the ebb and flow of the magical energies is a trivial matter. If you had someone to teach you, I am certain you could master it.”
Placing her cup back on the table, she looked at him. “I am curious as to the reasons behind your sudden aggression upon me mentioning your magic however. I have shown you nothing but kindness and gone out of my way to give you the aid you required… Yet at a mere passing remark you seemed to consider me a possible threat. And try as I might, I simply cannot discern any possible reason for this.”

Kerodi sipped his tea, thinking of the best way to explain it. He figured a little history might be the best bet. "I am a wielder of magic," he began softly. "But I'm more a student of the history of Valear. I have traveled the entire length and breadth of this land, studying the past and trying to learn more about the magic I wield and others."
He took another sip and stared off into his past. "I was born with magic, so I have never not known of it. I was surprised by your ability to sense it because the magic I summoned back in the room was of a different variety than most in Valear practice. Very few can detect it, even when looking for it. That shook me momentarily until I saw that you have a powerful magic of your own." He wanted to question her about her magic and that odd symbol, but he pushed on past his curiosity for now.
"I was caught off guard by the mention of magic because of how hard it can be to detect. Before I left for my latest journey, I had begun to hear rumors of a new sect of magic beings...absorbents, they are called." He paused and took another sip of tea. "Absorbents have the ability to drain the magic of others into their own beings, acquiring their magical abilities."
He looked around the room casually, but making sure no one was paying them too much mind. Turning back to Lethe, he continued, "One village I went through on the way here had a healer. He was trivial in some ways, but very practiced. They had come through and absorbed his power, but in doing so, they had drained him of his life and identity. He survived in a physical sense...but there was a mental...deterioration." Kerodi stopped talking for a minute, sitting back and sipping tea, shivering slightly thinking about the man he had seen.
"I hear they are a group that is growing stronger and they have an agenda, but what it is, I do not know." Kerodi shook his head and his familiar grin appeared back on his face. "Now, Lethe, tell me about yourself. Is your magic inherent like mine?"

Drinking her tea, she listened to Kerodi’s story without interrupting him. This group he described sounded like dangerous business, but she couldn’t help but be intrigued. She was quite certain that her own abilities were safe from them. What were the odds that one of them had his magic circuits torn asunder and reassembled like hers after all?
What she was most interested in however, was the mental deterioration he had mentioned. What if they could take out or destroy’s Eris’s mind while leaving hers intact? Now that was a possibility worth investigating.
What if it’s your mind that gets destroyed rather than mine though? Now that would be a wonderful occasion.
The voice sounded almost like it was purring and Lethe shivered a little at the thought. Still, other than that, she paid little heed to Eris and continued her conversation with Kerodi.
“I hail from a little village near the Lonea Lake. Though I say village, hamlet is probably more appropriate now that I think about this. Either way, village or hamlet, it is where I lived. I worked as both healer and apothecary as before my arrival, they had neither. My days were quiet and peaceful and I did good work, helping people that needed it.”
Her voice trailed off and slight tremble could be heard. She hadn’t even noticed her slight mistake. She told him that before her arrival the village had neither healer nor apothecary. In other words, she wasn’t a native of the village. Suddenly looking a little vulnerable, she grabbed her arm and looked lost for words.
“I… chose… to leave in response to certain… events. The particulars are something I wish not to discuss at this time. And seeing-“ She broke off mid-sentence and her eyes emitted an angry glare as she swiveled her head to the side, finally giving in to the urge to put Eris in her place. “Oh please, do be silent you murderous shrew. I am trying to…”
Her face turned red as she covered her mouth with her hand, refusing to look Kerodi in the eyes.

Kerodi was astonished when Lethe began talking to herself. He had not been surprised by the story as they were common in Valear. Magic-wielders usually made a place home that was not where they were from originally, usually due to a misunderstanding in their home location.
He was about ready to say as much and that he too had been raised elsewhere when she had given a retort to herself...almost as if she saw another person in the room. He watched her look of horror as her face turned red and she avoided his gaze.
Realizing his mouth was open in shock, Kerodi closed it and took a drink of his tea, contemplating how to move on. He decided it best to ignore the outburst for now and continue the rest of the conversation, but something about that situation nagged him...he just couldn't place it yet. Oh well, it would come to him.
"How did you learn to become a healer and apothecary? Many know how to use magic to heal, but I'm sorry to say that not many decide to reside in a hamlet and make use of the magic in work like you do."

As Kerodi seemed to ignore her outburst, she slowly relaxed while Eris’s devious laughter was a echoing in her mind. Realizing it would be best to go along with the flow, she decided to continue her story. “Well… I had the knowledge and during my time there, I was looking for a way to make a living. Even if it was a humble and simple life, it was good.”
Her lips curved upward somewhat as the memories of that time raced across her mind. “You are mistaken about one particular detail however. I never once used my magic during that time.” Her smile disappeared like snow before the sun. “The very nature of my magic is a source of pain and grief to myself as I cannot use it to aid others…”
Her eyes dropped to the empty cup in her hands while her voice dropped to a whisper. “Death, decay and destruction are all it causes. There is no other use for it. It pains me to accept this, but it is as it is.” Concluding with a heavy sigh, she remained silent for a while.
Having had enough of her own pity party, she shoved such thoughts aside and looked Kerodi in the eyes. “You… you mentioned you were heading deeper into the woods to find the Gnomish tribes correct? I presume this means you know your way around those parts? If so, would you allow me to impose my company on you? Until my path diverges from yours.” She wasn’t entirely certain she should ask this of him, but so far he had seemed a pleasant enough companion. And after many weeks of Eris’s harrowing thoughts as her only company, she longed for some decent conversation that did not end in her sneering at the other to shut up.

Kerodi was impressed by this lady. She was a healer that did not use magic, but had a plethora of it...apparently all of it bad. While intrigued, he was not frightened, although maybe he should be.
"That would be great. If my journey continues like it has, I might need your help again." Kerodi laughed heartily at the thought, seeing it less likely in the morning light and downed the rest of his tea.
"I should be glad to have you journey with me, Lethe," he said, putting down his empty cup and laying some money out on the table. "Are you ready to leave today? I'm feeling much better and I would like to move while the day is upon us."

When Kerodi welcomed her company, she was uncertain about whether to feel happy or frightened. But, what was done, was done. She gave a small nod in response to his question and rose from her chair. "That would not be an issue as that was my original plan. I never stay in one place for long. It is better that way." She walked over to the stairs and stopped for a brief moment.
"I just need to get my belongings, meagre as they are, from my room. It will take no more than a minute." With that, she disappeared up the stairs. True to her word, she came down only shortly after, carrying a small pack over her shoulder.
Dropping some money on the counter for her room, the innkeep looked at Kerodi with a sly grin. "Yer a lucky one ain't ya? First yer saved by a beautiful lass and then you get to take 'er out. Some fellers just 'ave all the luck." Lethe ignored the mans good natured gibe as she stepped outside.
After the heavy storm of last night, the clear blue sky above her was a welcome sight. With a deep breath, she took in the fresh morning air. Readjusting her small pack, she closed her eyes and raised her chin, basking in the rays of the sun as she waited for Kerodi to follow her.
