Name: Jarrah Mantiév
Age: Somewhere around 120, looks 24
Gender: Male
Race: Half elf, half human
Height: 6 foot
Weight: ~160
Class: Mage
Occupation: Medic
Physical Description:
Jarrah is the tall and limber type, physically built for speed and agility rather than brute strength. He inherited many of the elfin traits of his father – pale blonde hair, longer life span, and generally fair features. His hair is a bit longer than shoulder length and he usually ties it back into a short ponytail to keep it out of his face. Even so, sometimes his bangs still slip over his emerald eyes. But he doesn’t have the trait that would betray his elfin heritage – the pointed ears. If he wanted to, he could easily pass himself off as a normal human with abnormal abilities, and he often does.
His clothes are rather simple – worn trousers, a black turtleneck, and plain brown boots. He also wears a belt that holds a couple of daggers he carries on his person for protection. During the colder months he also wears an unimpressive white coat – though it’s not really white anymore, he’s had it for so long. He carries with him at all times a large messenger-style bag. In it is a spare set of clothes, a blanket, and his supplies for making medicines and such.
Powers/Strengths:
--Jarrah has the heightened senses of the elves, but they’re not quite up to par with those of a full-blooded elf.
--He’s a healer first and foremost. He started training with his father as a medic when he was six years old and has kept at it ever since, so he can do quite a bit. Things like internal injuries will certainly wear him out for a time afterwards. If he had to, he could downgrade a fatal injury to critical, but the person would have to heal on their own afterwards until he got some of his energy back. He may pass out or he may not – it depends on how much energy he had to use and how much he has when it’s needed.
--Jarrah has also had some training as a mage. His human mother taught him how to use the light element to aid in his medical work, and also how to use it defensively and offensively. He has several tricks he can use, but these abilities aren’t nearly as developed as his healing powers. He’s also figured out on his own a couple of ways he can manipulate sound magic to his advantage. However, these abilities are very few and very limited – he has to carry a whistle in order to pull them off.
--In the past ten years of being on his own, Jarrah has had to learn how to defend himself with a weapon. Since he doesn’t have any clue how to use swords and such, he carries a couple of daggers. These rarely prove useful, however, and he doesn’t find himself using them often. And since he’s not physically strong, he relies on using the other’s own momentum and movements against them when caught in hand-to-hand combat, rather than attacking head-on.
Weaknesses:
--Jarrah may be able to heal most injuries for other people, but his powers have virtually no effect on himself. He’s unaware of it, but there’s some sort of mental block preventing him from reaching that level of ability. The main thing that he can’t heal on the spot for another is a broken bone. He has to rely on a good old fashioned splint for those.
--The long years on the run have caused him to put up a wall that keeps people emotionally distant. While he always acts friendly and personable, he never lets himself get attached to anyone.
--While he can certainly defend himself and fight someone if he has to by using his light element, Jarrah isn’t really a fighter. He’s acquired enough skill to fend off those who come after him, but other than that… If he ever crossed paths with someone of significant power and ability, he wouldn’t last long.
--He isn’t really afraid of heights, but he ends up with a terrible case of vertigo whenever he’s in an area of high altitude, more so than is normal. So he tries to avoid areas like mountains whenever possible.
--An old injury on his left leg didn’t heal properly, so occasionally it acts up and causes him to have a slight limp, especially when he’s been walking for a long time or there has been a lot of activity. Acquired this during the first encounter with a hunter working for his brother.
--Because light is an “unbalanced” element, there have been occasions when he was under extreme stress or anger where he has taken on a completely different personality. When his imbalance kicks in, he becomes cold and uncaring. It doesn’t take much to bring him out of it, though, once the danger has passed. A good whack across the face will do nicely. And it doesn’t happen often, either. But this imbalance is why he tries so hard to keep from getting angry or stressed.
Personality:
Jarrah is probably the friendliest guy you'll ever meet. He's always smiling and almost always seems outwardly happy. The smile doesn't even often disappear when someone is yelling at him. At first glance his calm, gentle, and sometimes goofy nature may lead one to think he's a pushover, but that isn’t the case. He won’t hesitate to stand up for himself or others when necessary, though he prefers subtle yet snappy verbal comebacks over physical violence to put someone in their place.
Friendly to a fault, it takes something pretty big to rile up his temper. He tries not to let the little things bother him because he knows it doesn’t fix anything. Having been raised as a mage/healer, he’ll aid someone who needs it, whatever their race or background, even if they're a total stranger. In this case, he’s a bit vulnerable and has a bad habit of being too trusting of some people. He often realizes this a little too late in the game and is sometimes forced to fight his way out of a sticky situation. He has a tendency to give some people a nickname or two, but he’s more respectful of women and will call them by their proper name until he’s informed he can do otherwise.
Despite his friendly disposition, it’s rare for him to truly become emotionally attached to anyone. As such, he doesn't have many close friends and tends to cut ties with people. He doesn’t like to stick around in any one place for any length of time, either, because he’s afraid those who search for him will catch up.
History:
Jarrah was born and raised in a small clan of elves within the forest. His mother, Nyssa, was human but was accepted into the village after marrying his father, Kaius. He has an elder brother, Alaron, but the two never really got along. It became clear early on that the brothers were very different. Jarrah had the ability to heal and manipulate light, while it seemed his brother was just…ordinary.
Jarrah knew Alaron hated him for this, for his brother often went on rants of how the younger was the “favorite” of the two and made it obvious that he was angry. Jarrah tried more than once to fix things, but Alaron wouldn’t listen. Eventually his anger boiled over and it was discovered that the elder brother could manipulate darkness and shadows. This ability frightened the villagers, and Alaron was quickly banished. Kaius and Nyssa were unable to do anything to stop it.
Time passed and things returned to normal. Eventually it seemed Alaron was all but forgotten. Jarrah inherited his father’s longer life span and often wondered if Alaron did, too. The older brother may have hated the younger, but Jarrah had never really had anything against Alaron. At least…not until about ten years ago.
Nyssa eventually passed on from old age, so that left Jarrah and Kaius to fend for themselves. Things were fine for some sixty years. But Jarrah awoke one night to screams and sounds of death throughout the village. When he got outside, he found that his brother was indeed still alive and had recruited several minions to help him attack the village.
Kaius was murdered in the attack, as were the majority of the other villagers. But Jarrah didn’t stick around to see just how bad it was. It was too obvious Alaron had been perfecting this ability of his to manipulate the shadows, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to stand up to his brother as he was now. So, somehow, he managed to sneak out of town without his brother finding him and went on the run. He was hoping Alaron would be satisfied after attacking the village and would just leave him out of it.
No such luck. A few months later he ran into one who was working under his brother, and that was when he learned Alaron was searching for him. And not so that the two of them could make amends. Jarrah already knew his brother’s anger and hatred had consumed him, and if he were to be captured and brought back, who knew what Alaron would to do him?
Jarrah managed to fend off that hunter, but he quickly realized that he was going to have to improve his fighting abilities if he was going to reach the end of this ordeal alive. So he practiced often with his light abilities and picked up a few tricks with sound magic, and he bought himself a couple of daggers just in case. But he only has so much capability for fighting, so he does everything he can to avoid run-ins with his brother’s cronies.
So far, Alaron hasn’t shown his face since the night of the slaughter. But who knows how long it’ll be before he shows up…
