Name: Shyael (real name is Kourin, but only a select few are privy to this)
Age: 300+, appears in her early twenties as a human.
Gender: Female
Race: Kirin
Height: Kirin – 4 ½ feet at the shoulder / Human – 5’ 2”
Weight: Kirin – about 350 lbs / Human - 110
Occupation: Musician
Physical Description:
Kirin: Basically she looks like a small white horse. Her mane, tail, and fur are all a pure white. Her eyes are such a pale shade of lavender that they’re close enough to be considered white as well. On her forehead is an odd horn that distinguishes the Kirin race from a normal horse. She doesn’t walk around in this form often when around others, but it does make traveling between towns much easier.
Human: Shyael is on the short and thin side. She likes to wear knee-length loose skirts and a sleeveless top similar to a halter-top. Her clothing is always white. Her hair is the same color and reaches her waist, though some say it takes on a lavender tint in the right lighting. Most often she likes to let it hang loose. If one were to look at her eyes, it wouldn’t be difficult to tell she is blind. As in her Kirin form, they are lavender but not quite as pale.
Powers/Strengths:
→ All Kirin have a natural ability for flight and telepathy. Shyael is no exception. She doesn’t like to fly often, though, unless someone else is navigating. Being blind, it’s rather difficult to tell where she’s heading while up in the air. Both abilities are limited to her Kirin form. She can’t do either as a human.
→ Over time, Shyael has acquired some very limited magical abilities out of necessity. They’re useless when it comes to fighting – the magic is only meant to help her navigate without her sight. As an example, she can track her location with earth magic by sensing nearby objects that are in contact with the ground. Should the need ever arise, these same abilities could be used to locate a missing object or person.
→ Shyael’s hearing is very sharp, equivalent to that of a full-blooded elf, as a way to make up for her blindness. Her sense of smell is also quite keen.
Weaknesses:
→ Her blindness can be a huge hindrance, though she has learned to get along well without being able to see.
→ Anyone of the Kirin race becomes ill at the mere sight of blood. This isn’t the case for Shyael since she’s blind in the first place, but she does get nauseous at the smell. And she will end up violently if she comes into direct contact with another’s blood.
→ She’s very naïve and easily taken advantage of.
→ Shyael is by no means a fighter. If she were ever attacked, she wouldn’t be able to defend herself.
Personality:
As mentioned above, Shyael is very naïve. It’s in a Kirin’s nature to be trusting of those around them, so those with less-than-honorable intentions tend to exploit that. Shyael has had her share of these incidences – and she’s been exploited in more ways than one. Even so, it hasn’t changed her outlook on things. Because of her handicap, she almost has to be able to trust others just to manage a day-to-day existence. But due to certain past experiences, she has learned to trust her gut. If someone she meets gives off a bad vibe, she’ll make her exit as quickly and politely as possible. If not, then she might hang around a while.
She’s very soft spoken and quiet but not really shy – she doesn’t talk much. She doesn’t go out of her way to stay hidden, and neither does she make it a point to be noticed. For the most part she takes whatever life throws at her in stride and deals with the less pleasant aspects as best as she can. She’s the kind to keep her own pain and sadness locked away where others can’t see it. Almost always she puts someone else’s problems ahead of her own and won’t speak of herself unless prompted, if even then.
Her mother used to tell her stories of some of the ways other races have taken advantage of the Kirin. So after ending up on her own, she took on a different name and form to conceal her true heritage. She would only reveal these things to someone she trusts with her life unless left with no choice. As of now, only one such person has fit that description.
History:
The first half century of Kourin’s life was uneventful. Growing up with a very small group of extended family members near the mountains, she lived a sheltered life. She was born blind, so her parents were very protective of her. That’s what prompted her to wander off one night. She ended up getting lost and never did find her way back.
After a couple weeks she was found by a young human mage. Upon learning what she was, he took her with him on his travels. He taught her a few magic spells that would help her get around among other things. It was easy to pass her off as a unique breed of horse, so few people saw past the ruse and weren’t aware she was really a Kirin. To date that mage is the only living being outside of her original family that came to know her real name. Before long the mage grew old and passed on, leaving Kourin to fend for herself again.
By now, though, she had learned enough about the outside world that she could manage okay on her own. She adopted a human image and changed her name to hide her Kirin heritage, but that didn’t stop the more unscrupulous folks from taking advantage of her trusting nature. On one such occasion she was badly beaten, raped, and left for dead. For a long time after that she stayed hidden in the forest – until she realized she was letting her attackers control her by leaving her frightened of the rest of the world.
So although it took some time and effort, she gradually began to trust people again. But she tries to be more careful now than she used to be and listens to her instincts. She’s been wandering for a long while, making a living as a musician – she sings and plays a rather unique instrument (the easiest way to describe it would be a travel-sized version of the Japanese koto).
