Name: Descus "Black Bird" D'Neherré (Deh-nuh-her-ey)
Age: 40
Race: Human
Profession: Assassin/Mercenary
Country of Origin: Majené
Appearance: Incredibly tall compared to most men (6'5"), he rather much stands out, much to his eternal chagrin. He's considered a handsome fellow (which he will quite vainly state, to the amusement and annoyance of others), although signs of his age are apparent, with grey hair growing at his temples and some lines around his mouth and eyes. The rest of his hair is cut short, a habit from the army, and is black, as is his short beard. His eyes are a slate blue, unreadable at times and can be cold with malice at others. His nose also appears to have been broken at least twice. His clothing and armour are unremarkable at first glance, but a closer inspection reveals that, while plain, they are very well made, tailored to fit, and of the best material money can buy- meaning wealth, meaning success at what he does. His demeanor is described as "infuriatingly pleasant", with a calm smile and manner that either puts people at ease, or makes them certain that he is mocking them.
Personality: He’s nice enough, if not met on the job, despite his profession, and he enjoys making fun and joking (even when not entirely appropriate). Barring when he’s on a mission, he’s kind and helpful (especially to young women, the lecher). He will, however, do unsavoury things to get his job done, and with brutal efficiency. He may not like it, but he will do whatever it takes. Under the polite smiles lies something else, a sad man living long passed what he’s wanted. Other than that, he enjoys strong drink (and avoids it like the plague), and he loves pretty women (whom he avoids with far less success, not that he’s really trying). He also despises magic.
History: He was born in the country Majené to a farming family, eldest of six siblings. He was the only child to survive past childhood, however, so when he abandoned the family farm at 16 to lead a life in the army, his parents were heartbroken, and they died not long after. He enjoyed his time in the army, feeling as if he was doing a great service to his country (plus, the girls seemed to be very much attracted to the regalia). At 20 he was made an officer and was stationed at the border town Laquia There he met the lovely woman Anora, and the two engaged in three years of “indecent behaviour” before he thought of proposing. She didn’t mind the wait... much. Her way of punishment was to not allow him in the house for three days while she “decided”.
Descus admits that he may have deserved that.
Two years later, while potentially expecting a child, Descus was sent with his soldiers to meet an invading force from the bordering country. When they arrived, however, the invading army wasn’t there, and it was learned that the information had been false; there were spies in the army intelligence, and the border town had been left completely undefended. Nobody survived the ensuing massacre, and Descus’ army returned long after the other force had gone.
Mad with grief, he killed all suspected spies, regardless of whether they may have been innocent or not, and was subsequently thrown out of the army and barely missed being thrown in prison. Intent on dying, but with his religion denying him death by his own hand, he threw himself into mercenary work, hoping to end his life to rejoin his beloved in the afterlife. Each mission he took had great risks and he took chances, but despite all this survived each mission, lasting 5 years before he went into assassination, where his particular method of execution earned him the nickname “Black Bird”.
Somehow, he has survived for 15 years, much to his great annoyance, despite increasingly dangerous jobs and his increasing age.
Strengths: Quick mind; trained well in swords, daggers, and throwing knives; not particularly fast but with a higher endurance; fairly strong.
Weaknesses: Hates magic and thus is susceptible to it; age has slowed and weakened him somewhat; not too good at hand-to-hand combat; has a death wish.
Trivia: Descus played a minor NPC role in Searching For Something Forgotten.
