Name: Torgar Eriest, formerly of the Stonewill Clan. [Exiled.]
Gender: Male.
Race: Dwarf.
Age: Thirty-three (which is relatively young, for a Dwarf).
Occupation: Craftsman.
Height: Four feet, nine inches.
Weight: Two-hundred pounds (he is much heavier then his size would suggest, due to the highly dense skin, muscle and bone of Dwarves).
Eye Colour: Dark Blue.
Hair Colour: Rusty Orange.
Physical Appearance:
Equipment: Torgar wears a backpack that contains many Dwarfish tools used in the arts of blacksmithing, prospecting, and mining. The backpack also holds basic travel supplies (bedrolls, food, water, etc.). He has not yet acquired any proper weapons, but he can still defend himself using a pick-axe, a hammer, or another tool.
The iron earring worn in his left ear is actually an enchanted heirloom of his family. It gives him the power to see in complete darkness.
Apart from that, Torgar only has his clothing, as seen in the picture above. His clothes are uniformly brown and black in colour because they are, in fact, a uniform! This outfit is part of the official prospector’s uniform in the Stonewill Clan. And the reason he goes without a shirt? That is anyone’s guess… perhaps he finds the surface to be a hot place, or perhaps he just likes showing off his muscles.
Current Currency: Twenty silver coins.
Skills: Torgar is a talented blacksmith, able to work with almost any metal, and he creates very high-quality items of all sorts. He is also a very capable prospector, able to tell what kinds of ores could be extracted from any given rock, with just a few quick tests. Naturally, he is also a miner. His combat skills are a bit rusty, but he still knows how to swing a weapon.
Personality: He’s an upbeat and confident sort of Dwarf, despite the loss and hardship that he has experienced in his life. He has a very strong work ethic, seeming to never tire of his crafts, and he is very determined when he has a clear goal ahead of him. When it comes to business, he is a shrewd haggler, buying things at only the lowest price he can get, and selling his own wares for no less then their worth. In more casual conversation, Torgar is quite friendly, but brutally honest and blunt. He hates to talk about his past or his problems, and instead makes himself a good listener, putting in a simple observation or opinion here and there. This Dwarf is quick to joke and laugh, and lets any disrespect or insults toward him simply roll off his shoulders. Getting him angry is difficult, but once he does become enraged, he usually blacks out, and does or says things that he may regret later. Torgar is not a racist, but he tends to treat his fellow Dwarves extra-nicely (probably because he has seen so few of his own kind ever since he came to the surface).
History: The Stonewill Clan were fairly typical Dwarves. They lived as miners, smiths and mushroom farmers in large caverns beneath the Ularian Ridge, and occasionally sent merchants out to the surface, to sell their extra ores or their crafts. They had few warriors, since they were a small enough settlement to have gone unnoticed, and had never had to defend themselves. Their existence was a very peaceful one, except for the times when they feuded with one another...
But I'm getting ahead of myself. I should start at the beginning.
Torgar was born into a fairly high-class family of the Stonewill Clan: the Eriests. His father was a prospector who explored new caves, always looking for deposits of ore that the clan could extract from the stone. Torgar's mother, on the other hand, was a blacksmith. He was their only child, and both his parents loved him dearly, raising him to be a respectable young Dwarf.
As an apprentice to both his father and his mother, Torgar learned both their arts. He seemed to have natural talent as a blacksmith, but he enjoyed the work of a prospector far more. He loved to explore the endless and unknown caves, taking pride in being the first one to set foot on their rough floors, chart their many tunnels, and test their stony depths for precious metals. Therefore, he spent much of his time spelunking, out on prospecting expeditions with his father.
At first it was usually just the two of them - father and son exploring the vast underground world, cave by cave. But eventually, his father took on another apprentice, from another family.
This new apprentice's name was Vrakkic Kargnoll. He was a miner, from one of the lower-class families of the Stonewill Clan. He was a bit older then Torgar, though he stood a few inches shorter, and he had fair blonde hair, with a long braided beard. His green eyes shone like emeralds. He was an eager apprentice, thrilled to have a chance to be something more then just a miner in life, and therefore he shared Torgar's great enthusiasm for the art of prospecting. The two young Dwarves became best friends, almost like brothers, working closely together for many years under Torgar's father's guidance.
Eventually, they were grown Dwarves, and Torgar's father was an old man with a graying beard. It was time for them to graduate from their place as apprentices, and become prospectors in their own right.
Normally, at this time, they would have gone their separate ways. After all, it isn't practical for two of the Clan's prospectors to be in the same place, when they could find more deposits in more places by splitting up. But Torgar and Vrakkic had become very close over the years, and they insisted on continuing to work together.
Years passed, and the arrangement did not change. Torgar and Vrakkic would spend months exploring the caves together, completely alone and completely content. It wasn't long before it was quite obvious, to both of their families, that the two young men had become lovers.
Dwarven society is highly conservative, and while relationships of this kind were not unheard of, they were almost always frowned upon. The Stonewill Clan had never been an exception to this policy, and when word spread of Torgar and Vrakkic's relationship, most of the Dwarves cried out for their exile - or even their execution.
Few defended them. Torgar's mother was one of these few, but his father was not, and nor were either of Vrakkic's parents. Deeply hurt by this, Torgar tried desperately to convince his father to accept his love for Vrakkic. Unfortunately, the elderly Dwarf would hear none of it, and the argument grew so intense that it broke up his marriage to Torgar's mother. Now riddled with guilt for his parents' split, Torgar lived with his mother in shame.
Vrakkic, however, fared even worse. His parents had already been bitter toward him, thinking that he was 'snooty' for having decided to try and become a prospector instead of just a miner. His homosexuality was the final straw, and his family disowned him. In grief, Vrakkic fled to live with Torgar; but he was followed by his brothers.
A battle of Dwarf against Dwarf, brother against brother, then ensued. Torgar came to his lover's defense, but he was too late, and Vrakkic was slain. Driven into a mad rage by the sight of his true love's battered body, Torgar struck out at everyone in sight with his tools. He killed more then twenty Dwarves, some of them innocent bystanders, and was driven from the Clan's halls in shame and exile.
Now he wanders the surface world, aimless and filled with regret. He longs for his beloved caves, and his beloved Vrakkic - but they are lost to him, forever.
