Ularian Ridge has been known for monster attacks along the trails of travelers. But far past the common path, attacks become even more prevalent as those brave enough take short cuts, or wish to venture into the unknown for adventure. Not many, if any, find the outer-reaches of the massive chain of ridges. It is here were it seems as if nightmares come together to dominate the land, the sky and any collection of water. The sky is forever blackened, the only natural light is the constant lightning. Though dangerous as it seems, it hardly touches the ground. Hardly a spec of intelligent life is anywhere, but there are some beings who find ways to make this place home.
One of them is Ithen Mikelru. However, not by choice. With his soul bound to a colossal castle along one of the ridges, he seeks a way to free himself, and his family.
He looks out into the harsh weather from a balcony. For days, he had made several attempts to test the scope of his bond with the castle. Because now his keeper had finally given his last breath. Unfortunately the spell that locked him to the castle still worked to some extent, but he discovered that he could leave for a while.
The wizard that ruled over him and the other prisoners-- his family; but he took care of them. That man was the only one who could leave and collect food. But he had died. It was now Ithen's duty to care for his family. Of course, this could not be done without leaving. You may think that it was nice for the wizard to give him this leverage, but to Ithen and his family, it was worse than death.
No matter what they tried they couldn't shake their eternal sentence of living. He and his family had hoped they would die of starvation due to the wizard's fault of being mortal and dying. Ithen would not allow himself to kill the family off through starvation. He loved them. Someone else must do it! The wizard must have known this, long before he came to realize the scope of these issues. The wizard was so much more wiser than they.
Ithen wandered through the halls, there was no security since the keeper died. The man's seals kept out unwanted visitors, but now rats started to seek shelter from the rain and their predators. Eventually those rats brought in their predatory company soon after. They were small, nearly serpent like dragons with bat like wings. Thankfully they kept the numbers of each other steady, and Ithen didn't have to intervene. It was the larger monsters that gave him trouble. Unable to attack these with his half human form, he recalled the spells that the keeper used, and sealed them within the many prison cells in the castle. He had become like the wizard, keeping other beings locked up. He hated himself for it. But he had no choice, he needed to be around to care for his family, and had no other means of keeping them from killing him. He cursed at his weak form, recalling every monster he locked up. Surely they wished they were dead too.
Ithen continued to wander the halls seeking a purpose. He looked as if he was counting every crack, noticing every new sprout of moss, fiddling with any lose stone, listening to the chorus of squeaky stairs as he walked upon them. The whole castle was just as dull his small, old cell-- only bigger, with stairs, doors, and other new, dull things to look at. Though he cared for his family, he never sought their company.

Boredom. The streets of Tamasha Village wore on Vexxus' nerves. Mundane repeats of everyday life weren't enough. No, she wanted to leave. She had moved around a lot before, and she was ready to again. And again, that meant that she had to lift all her anchors, which she had tried to force into Tamasha anyway, and they hadn't exactly settled in good places. Job after job, she had encountered the slightest issue with every assignment, but fixed it without complaint or notification to the person holding the money. Sometimes the fix wasn't simple; and she was growing tired of the way people treated her. She had plenty of money now, and as always, was free to do what she wished.
Freedom. Was it really all that it was cracked up to be? Vexxus honestly didn't know. Without a place that she felt at ease with calling home, and no one she was attached to, Vexxus was practically alone. Though she was surrounded by so many people, she always returned to the same conclusion and nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach.
The cure? She sold all of her extra clothes, her apartment and all of the furniture, returning to the simple belongings that she began with: the clothes on her back, a dark azure cloak, and her runed shadowblade. The only other thing she carried was a small sack slung around her waist that hung at her side holding a few supplies she always carried. Food, (Not that she needed it, being immortal, but she often ran into people that did.) medical ointment and wraps, some paper, and a few other various items of lesser importance. With these belongings, she set out for the mountains.
Using her dragon shadow form, Vexxus flew over the land with ease. Through small snowstorms, hail, and even some lightning, until she came to a place she saw was out of the ordinary. She landed atop a rock formation when it came into a well-to-do seeing distance, and surveyed the area. Dark clouds seemed to cumulate unnaturally around a massive black castle on a lone island. The island was not far from the mountain range, and one would almost think it was only a peninsula, but Vexxus could glimpse the ocean jutting between the castle and the beginning of a mountain.
This looks like it could be interesting. She thought. There were a lot of interesting things in the Ularian Ridge, just not too many that were truly interesting to Vexxus; as she had seen a lot of extraordinary things in her lifetime.
Taking off from the rock, Vexxus pushed off, racing towards the castle in a new passion for adventure. Just in case anyone was watching, she made herself visible. While she was not exactly self-centered, she did like to show off once in a while. It would also make things more interesting; as seeing a dragon coming is much more exciting than seeing a person strolling up to greet you.
Nearing the massive drawbridge, Vexxus extended her front legs, claws bared, grabbed the top of the bridge and from the force that was carrying her through the air, made a rather thunderous "thud" on the thick wood. Almost as if bouncing off of the door, she immediately sank her claws into the wood as though it were foam, and pulled the drawbridge open far enough for her reptile-esque figure to slip through.
Once inside, Vexxus let her eyes adjust to the darkness, with only a minuscule amount of light filtering through some cracks and small openings.

As Mikel heard a loud noise the first thought that came to him was that another monster found its way to several openings of the castle. After the loud noise he heard the clanging of the chains retracting back to it's original position. His anxious waiting in eternity was interrupted yet again. It didn't matter how long ago the last monster came in, even if it were years. As each being forces him to react, he becomes conscious of time yet again. Oh how he sought to be numb from it all! If only his brain would merely rot away without the work of any outside stimulus. He ran closer towards the sound, to get rid of it quickly.
The halls were lighted every few twenty feet with torches. There were at least one in between, but he didn't bother to tend to them all. As long as he could mostly see where he was going it was fine. When he neared the outer parts of the castle though, the number of feet in between quickly grew. It was his way to avoid attracting monsters that were drawn in by the light. Besides, the less torches the less work he had to do.
He quickly came to the large room at the castle entrance, where the draw bridge is. It may have once served as a way for the rulers of a kingdom past to speak with the villagers, or maybe a place to welcome weary travelers. But whatever it was used for, that was the past.
With dim lighting behind him from one of the halls, his eyes glowed yellow, catching the small hints of light. He wore a black robe with brick red and gold ornamental print lining the center of the body. With a long sleeved cropped jacket with matching black fabric of the robe, with more matching ornamental marks lining the arms. The back had openings for his wings to pop out through. A darker red symbol on his chest, and black boots and pants underneath. Though his clothing looked worn, and the colours dulled with time. He locked onto the intruder with his hand ready to cast a spell. There was no need for conversation with a monster.

Vexxus' sensitive beast hearing caught the sound of brisk footsteps. Sensing magic nearby, then spotting the dull luminescence of a spell getting ready to cast, she saw a figure of a person in the dim lighting.
Thinking perhaps appearing as a potentially harmful, heartless creature might not have been the best option, she quickly transformed back into her regular form. Her dark blue cloak hung from her shoulders, concealing her black-dyed deerskin clothes and thin, light, mythril chain mail. She turned to face the stranger, her mail catching the light filtering through a crack where the drawbridge didn't quite meet the stone.
Vexxus pushed her hood back, revealing her light white and blue hair, then spoke. "Forgive me if I startled you, there is no need to take defense." She bowed in respect, hoping she hadn't gotten herself into the castle of some ancient evil sorcerer or the like. "I wasn't sure if there was anyone here."

Ithen halted himself when she transformed. Her voice caused him to tense up. With a sensation of mild panic he breathed irregularly for a moment. Almost like short gasps of fear.
"I wasn't sure if there was anyone here."
The half dragon took a step back, lowering his head slightly submitting to the unknown person. Though, he stayed tense and uncertain. He never spoke to any other living being other than his family and the keeper.
It didn't seem as if she would attack...
Ithen managed to speak with even tones.
"Why are you here...?"
His yellow eyes locked onto her pack. He smelled food. However her having food, her being two-legged, the way she spoke, and the white parts of her hair reminded him of the keeper. (The white hair merely because the man had become old.) He had a worry that somehow there was a connection between him and her.
He took another step back, glancing back and forth at her face, and her pack once more.

He stepped back, startled.
"Why are you here...?"
"At the moment, I'm not really sure..." She looked around. There was an odd feeling about the place. It seemed as though there was nothing there, as if it were dead, but at the same time as though she were being watched; as if the walls themselves were surveying this newcomer.
"I suppose you could say I was bored, and this place looked interesting. I'm naturally very curious..." She gave a sheepish grin, then added, "Perhaps to my own demise one day. Please forgive me, but I can't help but wonder what you're doing here...are you the only one here?"

He was expecting her to instinctively hand him the food. Just as the keeper used to. Somehow... he felt relieved that she didn't. Though, he totally disregarded her question of why he was here.
He was more focused on the question of if he was alone. He recalled the image of small rodents with wings. Ithen looked less tense now. His eyes blue-green eyes gave off the slightest hint of curiosity and playfulness, while the rest of his face kept a serious demeanor.
Before he answered he thought for a moment, 'She did appear as some kind of dragon at first, maybe she was friendly like the little serpent dragons that snuck in too.' One corner of his mouth raised a little. "I have some friends." He replied.
"You want to meet them?"

"I have some friends." He seemed a little bit more comfortable. Vexxus happily accepted his offer to meet them.
"That would be marvelous. I'm glad you're not alone...I'd imagine it would be very lonely here." She approached him slowly and cautiously, as not to seem intimidating, and also to make sure this wasn't all a facade.
Upon approaching, she noticed that he was not human. His eyes were a luminescent blue-green, dancing with life behind his somewhat serious expression. There was something else odd about him that she couldn't quite make out in the darkness, but perhaps when she was closer.

"Come, this way." He said a bit eagerly. He walked towards a hall. In the far distance there were torches. As they came slowly towards the light, his appearance could be seen a bit more clearly.
Ithen had assumed that she could see him fine, as he could see her. But he could only see her well because he was adjusted to the common corners of darkness in the castle, and the lack of sunlight outside. He had dragon wings and slightly angled back horns.
The deeper they came into the castle the more torches there were. But just enough to see, with enough gaps of darkness in between the torches. So he became visible, and invisible as they moved in and out of the shadows. A roar of thunder could be heard from outside. Ithen acted like he didn't hear it at all.
He went through one of the doors. There was a sound of dripping water, and it was gathering at a puddle on the edge of the room. It looked like an ancient room. There were moldy and broken furniture, books with broken spins, and all hints of color was so dull and gray.
The sound of a rat squealing was heard.
"There's one." He said.
He walked towards a gap in the wall and put his hands in, trying to reach for it. A second later the rat made more squealing noises. You could tell he grabbed it because his arms stopped frailing in the wall. He pulled it out and turned around to his guest.
He held out a small, gray, snake-like creature wrapped around a now limp rat. It had a very long neck, with a tail to match that length, a small head with horns, bat-like wings, and hairs growing at the lining of the spin and on the head. Though it appeared to be a small dragon, it didn't have scales. It started biting at the rat with its small mouth.
"I named her Cail."

As he turned to walk down the hall, Vexxus noticed that he had horns. Horns, yes. As he walked towards the light of the first torch, it became apparent that there was something on his back as well. When he reached the torch, and his back was illuminated, Vexxus saw that he had wings. Each had a spike at the top where they bent, and they were folded over each other, hanging from his shoulders.
She could not keep the smile from her face. Not ever having met anyone with horns, wings, and slit eyes, this was rather exciting. They entered a dark room where she could hear dripping noises. Her eyes adjusted to the light, and she almost exclaimed at the smell. There was a considerable amount of mold, and the whole room itself was aged. Broken furniture, old books, and torn pieces of upholstery littered a corner, and all that Vexxus imagined to be once-vibrant colors, were washed out to tones of reddish-grey and dim purple.
She heard a squeak from the wall, and the man rushed over, pulling out a rat. After seeing the rat, however, Vexxus noted that it was not the rat he was pulling out, it was what had killed it for food. A very tiny dragon-like creature, with skin instead of scales, clung to the dead carcass of the rodent, and began to eat it.
Moving closer very eagerly, Vexxus bent closer so that her face was only about a foot and a half away from the fascinating creature.
"Amazing!" She breathed the exclamation at a whisper, so as not to startle it. Standing up straight again, she looked to the man. "And may I just say that you yourself are quite fascinating. I've never met anyone with wings and horns." Now standing closer to him, she noticed that he was rather thin, though she couldn't be sure if it was his build, or malnutrition that made him appear so.

"Really?" Ithen said in disbelief. Most of everything he has ever saw had horns and wings. Well, except the keeper and most of the monsters he had captured.
He put the small dragon down on an aged table for her to finish her food. She had already made it through the throat of the rat. Her mouth being covered with some blood now.
He looked back at his guest. This was like the time when the serpent dragons first came in. He experimented with what he could do with them. If he could carry them, if they understood him, if they could do things for him. This person was much like that to him. He wanted to know more about her, but this time it felt so much more invigorating now that she could physically talk back to him.
Ithen thought to himself. He didn't want to bore his guest, but he also didn't want to show her too much. But there was probably nothing else that he could show her. He turned away from her halfway, not sure what else to do. He subconsciously started to fiddle with his study tan collar out of nervousness.

Vexxus smiled. "Really."
He seemed nervous somehow. Reaching up to his collar, he turned partially away from her.
"So...what exactly is this place?" She inquired. He obviously lived there alone, and she suspected that she was the only company he had had in....a long time.

"So...what exactly is this place?" Ithen clinched his teeth in anger, and his hand tensed up into a fist. He paused for a moment, as if he was resisting to answer. He growled under his breath, "It's prison..." He covered his face from stress, shame and anger. It was as if he was about to explode from recalling the statement. He slammed his hand onto the table, letting out a small puff of fire from his mouth. The small dragon instantly flew to the ceiling, with flight like a crow, but hung like a bat, leaving the unfinished rat for later. He shoved past her to leave the room with quickened walking pace. Some ways away from the room he came to a halt and started yell. Trying to dig his way out of the stone walls he sees every day of his miserable life. He tossed pieces of loose brick across the hall and on the floor, breaking them into smaller pieces. Then as quickly as the emotions came, they went. He sat the floor on his legs and stared down at the floor.

Vexxus was startled by his reaction; growling the words "It's prison.." and then letting out a breath of fire, fist contacting with wood as the small dragon leaped out of harms' way, then storming out the door and down the hall.
She followed at a distance, staying at the doorway, and watching with a sudden sympathy and concern for the man as he clawed at the stone in anger. Then, sinking to the floor, he ceased. Vexxus went to him, slowly, and crouched near him.
"You're....trapped here?" She said slowly, though it was more of a rhetorical question, because it was obvious that he was, as well as the fact that he was being driven insane because of it. Leaning to make an effort at eye contact, she made a promise. "I am going to get you out." She reached a hand out, offering to help him up. "If you tell me exactly how and why, I will help you find a way to escape."

Ithen put his hands on his ears and shook his head. "No one can help us, no one." He slouched closer to the floor, realizing he said 'us' and not 'me'. He covered his face with his hands again, hiding himself.
He tried to speak fast enough to block her off from any ideas of helping him. "The people who judged us are dead, the person who laid the seal and the sentece is dead. There's no way out, the spells still work..." He hesistated to continue. He spoke with a irregular tone, as if he was pained to speak. "Me... and my family... we have to live out our sentence..." He started to speak in near whisper, "However long it may be..."
He looked down at his hands, his fingers bleeding from clawing at the stone. In his head, he cursed at his weak form again. He recalled a time where something like this wouldn't cause him so much pain, and kept his mind on that. The thought calmed him a little.
