Mary stormed through the courthouse, wailing, failing her arms in the air, her hair drifting around her pear-shaped face in a crazed flurry, her eyes wide and wild, nostrils flared. Her skin became patchy and pale as she offered her narrative to the whole of the jury, her voice rising above the loud stomping of her boots.
"ADELENA FOUSETTE IS BOUND IN CONTRACT WITH THE DEVIL!" she shrieked, and many members of the court covered their ears as the audience looked on in shock and disgust, their sharp eyes turning at once to the pretty, barely-adult girl sitting at the front. Adelena Fousette felt tears tearing at the backs of her eyes but found no strength in herself to protest - the room was getting quieter and each bated breath took her own. She was unable to defend herself.
"I SAW HER SIGN HER NAME IN HER OWN BLOOD, I SAW HER HOLD HANDS WITH DEMONS!" the crazed girl continued, then turned and pointed squarely at Adelena's chest. "SHE'S OF AN UNHOLY NATURE!" Adelena merely squirmed. Was there some truth in her words? She had remembered the previous night playing with some shadowy creatures, but never had she thought much of it; their company was a comfort in the cold dead of a dark night. And then, she felt cold. Sitting in the courtroom, she felt very cold and very still, and then some warmth spilled onto her hands, and she cried out as she looked down, for her hands were stained heavily with blood. The courthouse suddenly became dark and everything began moving very slowly. She must have been beginning a descent into hell, or something like it - and her lungs nearly collapsed in fear. The small black creatures she had met the previous night arrived by her side, showing their skeletal faces and long claws as they dug into her chest, to fix her heart.
"It'll all be over soon, we promise," snickered one of them, and everything faded quickly into black.
Adelena's eyes snapped open, and for a moment in the moonlight they were a light shade of mahogany, instead of the bright blood red she had come to get used to over the past few centuries. They faded back again to that firey color, however, but she continued to shake for a second. That nightmare, though it had happened so long ago, was never far from her. One of the familiar black demons about the size of a chicken crawled out from the lake and shook cold water off of its back. Adelena stared at the stars until she noticed its precense, and then patted the folds out of her dress and nodded to it.
"Evening, Ceris," she greeted rather coolly with a tiny sigh. The thing snarled and shook its wings to rid the last of the water from it. "So this is the place they brought us to?" she asked, mostly to herself, as she examined her surroundings, and let her long fingers drift elegantly over the glassy surface of the cool, black lake. She watched her reflection shatter.
"I could get used to it, I suppose...if only I knew where to go and what to do but...well, they never have given me much instruction, have they?"Obviously anyone can (and should) join. :] -
