History/Background
Blood curdling screams...
Shots of gunfire....
The scent of burning corpses...
This was all Leonatio could remember from his past. What had happened that day? That day when a local farmer and his wife had found the 10 year old unconscious Leonatio on the shores near Elvaria Village? One thing was clear; Leonatio had absolutely no memories of anything up to the point of his arrival on Valear. Where had this boy come from?
Penela and Zekial agreed to raise the boy on their own from that day on, but there was something about him that was just a bit unusual. Leonatio would begin talking to some of the most peculiar of things, ranging from a cherry tree, to the chilly wind that was blowing one afternoon. They had thought that it was some kind of phase that he was going through, after everything that happened.
But the phase never seemed to end, and in fact seemed to get even weirder. One day when Leonatio was having a conversation with the cherry tree, Penela thought she had seen one of the branches move on its own and give Leonatio one of its cherries. But obviously, that was impossible, as trees couldn't move on their own.
By his teenage years, Leonatio wasn't the most popular of kids in the village. The others found him strange whenever he had gone to hang out with them. When the boys would head down and go swimming, Leonatio would talk to the water as he moved around, and go underwater for unusual periods of time. When the adults would go to work farming, Leonatio would strike conversations with the plants instead.
Despite the incredibly odd nature of this boy, he continued to grow up into a handsome young man as the years went by.
When Leonatio was 18, the villagers began voicing their concerns to his adopted parents. Apparently Penela wasn't the only one that had witnessed something more abnormal than the boy's conversations with nothing. One villager told of how he was heading to the lake, only to find Leonatio having one of his usual chats. But what was odd was that it was to a fish that came a little ways out of the water, staring at Leonatio as if it was understanding what he was saying.
What brought up even more concern was what the villager had brought up next. Apparently when Leonatio was talking to the fish, it was in a tongue that he himself had never heard of. A young woman in her 30s had mentioned how when he was talking to plants, she had recalled him talking in a language she'd never heard as well.
As she finished, there were even more murmurs among the other villagers, also bringing up moments that for some reason, they'd never thought of as well. What worried them the most was that the languages he was speaking didn't sound like the usual gibberish that kids were known to make up. Just who was this boy? Penela and Zeekial were going to get to the bottom of it.
Around the same time, Leonatio was skipping rocks at the lake as he was laughing, enjoying something that the water was telling him. As he was laughing, a group of the village teenagers, led by their leader Derick, interrupted him midway by grabbing him and propping him up.
"What's so funny?" Derick asked, as Leonatio remained silent. He knew that everyone thought him the oddball, and talking about what he heard would only help forever bind his label of a freak among the villagers. "I asked you a question." Derick said with a commanding tone in his voice as the people holding Leonatio gripped a bit tighter, pinching into his skin.
"Nothing." Leonatio replied, as Derick moved closer, getting into Leonatio's face. "That's right, freak." he said as he slowly backed up, and the people holding Leonatio thrust him to the ground hard. Derick looked down at Leonatio with a faint grin on his face. "You can't talk to plants, you can't talk to animals, you can't even talk to us." he explained as the others quietly laughed.
"Nobody wants you freak. We don't you, Penela and Zeekial, they don't want you, hell, even your real parents didn't want you." Derick continued as the laughter of the others gained a little more volume. Leonatio on the other hand was looking down and the ground, mustering as much as strength as he could to not break down right there. That couldn't be true, his parents had to have wanted him....right? They didn't think he was a freak...but why couldn't he even remember them?
Derick looked down at him at satisfaction; he was winning, and he knew it. He was breaking Leonatio down, which was only deserving for someone like him. "Why don't you talk to something freak?" Derick asked with the hint of a commanding tone in his voice.
Leonatio did nothing. He didn't want to be the freak of the village anymore. "I said talk to something!" Derick commanded as his face gained a more fierce and frustrated look. Leonatio looked around for something, hoping to hear its voice in his head that he could speak to, but something was wrong. He couldn't hear anything at all; nothing except the sound of the ocean waves.
"I can't..." Leonatio replied, with a stutter of surprise in his voice. "And don't you forget that, freak." Derick said back as he started to leave, the others following suit.
By the time Leonatio had gotten home, the villagers had left, and his adoptive parents were sleeping soundly in their room. Leonatio went to his bed, and with no one around, broke down right there.
The next two years of his life were uneventful and boring. Leonatio was now average, but still not well-liked in the village. He grew distant from his adoptive parents, until one day he left the village altogether and headed out on the road. Elvaria village could never be his home; it never was. He was determined to find out where home was, and so he began his journey for answers.
