Nothing But Lies

James listened to all the screaming going on. The young boy pressuring him to let go, Raine pleading, sweet Raine asking him to stop, vicious Gilashi ushering him onward to remove this threat and to take the bloodshed. James shook his head lowering the boy to the ground, letting his mind clear. He was so ashamed. he over reacted, but it was only because he though that Dez meant Raine harm. He gave his word though, so james trusted him. He blushed as he asked if Raine was his girlfriend and he growled slightly. "No, she isn't...I am merely a monster that protects here, therefore she could never love me..." He sighed and sat down once more, looking at his feet, sulking in his shame. "I apologize...I simply meant to protect her...I thought you were going to try and complete your mission...I apologize..."

"James don't say that. You're not a monster." She said sternly. Then she turned back to Dez. "He didn't mean to hurt you, he was just worried about me is all. I hope there's no hard feelings."

James sighed and rubbed his temples. His mind was a whirlpool of feelings, thoughts, and confusion. This intruder seemed innocent enough, but how to fully trust somebody who had originally planned to kill Raine? Why did he even care so much for the girl to whom he was no more than a shield? He did not know how to answer either question, so he sat in silence tending to the campfire, as the howls of wolves and other creatures made their music in the night.

Dez looked at Raine, and then at James. Anger started to boil up inside him. "No hard feelings?" He said to Raine. "NO HARD FEELINGS!? Love, if you didn't just notice, your friend here just tried to KILL ME! WHAT THE 'ELL WAS THAT?!" Dez stormed over to James, furious. "Brotha, you mind tellin' me what tha 'ell you were doing?" Dez poked James in the forehead. "and you." Dez whirled, looking at Raine, in a much warmer, kinder way. "Thank you, love." Dez smiled warmly, and started to walk away.

James growled slightly, but retracted his anger, sighing. He knew becoming upse again would not help in any way. He bowed his head. "I apologize Dez. I merely got upset about your past objective of slaying the demon girl. You yourself said that Raine appeared much like her, and I was half frightened that you would become confused and in some attempt at accomplishing your past goal try to harm her. I Acted rashly, and I cannot apologize enough...but you must be , and tired. Why don't you spend the night here, and if you wish you can travel to the nearest town with us on the morrow?: he suggested.

Dez reacted kindly right at the mentioning of food and hospitality, but tried to keep calm. "Well that sounds lovely, but I would like to know what YOU two are doing out in here in the woods." Dez sat down and looked at James. "Oh, and apology accepted, brotha."

"Now now Dez, everyone has their own little secrets. We can't be telling you everything right?" She smirked. "Unless your willing to tell us everything in return. That is how it goes.." She ruffled James' hair a bit and wrapped the cloth around her again as it was starting to get colder and her adventure in the pond was starting to freeze her body.

She yawned a bit and snuggled closer to the fire. "We should get some rest for tomorrow. It's going to be a long trip to the next town. We need all our energy."

James smiled as he nodded, agreeing with Raine. "She is right you now. Can't go divulging all our secrets until you do the same....erm....Brother?" James said laughing at himself, realizing how ridiculous he sounded. He blushed as Raine ruffled his hair, grateful the dark prevented them from seeing it. He saw she was still cold, and without a second though wrapped his arms around her, willing his body heat to move to her and keep her warm instead of him. He blushed deeper but kept hold until she was warm. "Rest will do all of us good...we will continue in the morning."

Dez looked at James, noticing he was blushing, but didn't say anything about it. "Well alright, I understand what your sayin'. I'll tell ya everything, but in return I want some answers." Dez stood up. "Oh, and James?" Dez chuckled "Don't mind the whole brotha thing, I used to work in a church. I guess everyone saying it just...stuck with me!" Dez walked by James, giving him a pat on the back. "Goodnight, brot-" Dez stopped himself. "Goodnight, friend."

Raine seemed shocked. She blinked as James wrapped his arms around her. Instantly her body began rigid, not used to the physical contact of someone holding her. It had been a long time since someone held her. Raine felt uneasy. She suddenly became aware that James even though he was younger than her seemed much stronger than her. As he refused to let go until she felt her shivering stop.

She didn't understand this at all. He was protecting her, but why? He was her friend yes, but his ability to become close to her without a second thought confused her mind and body. Pulling away a bit after she was warm, she smiled to him. "Thanks, I'm better now."

Lying down, she turned away from him. Not realizing until then that her face was hot, she was blushing.

No, stop Raine....I can't form feelings for him. He may say he's a monster...

But I'm the real one...

Dez woke up in the middle of the night. He was . "Not again...please, not again..." He said, looking at the palm of his hand. There was a red inscription on the palm, pulsing light. The inscription was a simple letter 'D'. "Aw no...no no no!" Dez said louder than he should have. He didn't want anyone to find out about this. For the rest of the night, Dez couldn't sleep. All he could do was think the dream he had, and how The One held him down, slowly inscribing Dez's hand. He looked back at his hand. "Atleast," Dez said "I hope it was just a dream."

James was slightly hurt when Raine pulled away, but he understood that he was probably the last person Raine would ever desire to hold her. He lay on the forest floor, looking up through the brush into the night sky, counting the constellations and retelling the stories the stars told until he drifted off to sleep...

He awoke later tot he sound of the young boy seemingly troubled. Stealthily he got up, and crouched in the darkness beside the boy. He bright marble eyes shone in the moonlight. "Something troubling you my friend?"

Dez jumped, "Jesus brotha'..." He then noticed his hand, and quickly covered it up by pulling his hand into his sleeve. "You scared the 'ell outta me..." Dez looked at James. His warm brown eyes meeting James's cold marble eyes. "No...no nothin's wrong...just a bad..." He hesitated, looking away. "...a bad dream..." He looked back at James. "James, there are somethings I will never tell you...but brotha," Dez quickly pulled out a small knife, holding it to James's throat. "I want some answers. Now."

James frowned as he watched Dez pull his hand back into his sleeve and he sighed. "I understand my friend, take your time..." He was cut short though when Dez pulled the knife and held it to his throat and he felt the anger boil inside of him. "Ha! Knew you should have burnt the lil bugger when you had the chance Jamesy" Gilashi chuckled in his head. James began tot think, if he died, who would protect Raine? He felt himself growl as his eyes turned red. Slowly, a low maniacal chuckle escaped his lips as he stared dead into Dez's eyes and he felt his hair turn silver. "You want answers huh?" He quickly grasped Dez by the wrist snapping it as he flipped him onto his back and placed his boot into the small of his back to pin him down and he glared down at him. "The truth is you messed with the wrong person little boy. Ya see, since childhood I've been inhabited by a veeeeeeery powerful demon. One that doesn't want this body hurt. Neither do I to be honest. But more importantly is that sweet angel sleeping over there...." He looked over at Raine, as He sneer faded and for a moment his own blue eyes flickered back,s of ull of adoration....and guilt, knowing that what he was doing now was wrong. He would never be like Danny, at the first sign of trouble he resorted to violence. Then the anger overtook him again. if he was a monster, so be it. he would still love Raine, and he would still protect her...his way, not Danny's. He pressed deeper into he boys back with his boot. "WE TRIED TO TRUST YOU! I KNEW YOU WERE SCUM! NOW YOU HAVE A CHOICE!" He shouted as he took his sword form his sheath and placed the tip to the boys neck, ready to hack it off. "Either run away with what little honor you have...Or I end your pathetic existence right now."

Dez was, surprisingly, calm. He looked James right in the eye and spoke. "James. To be honest. I don't care what you do now." Dez uncovered the palm of his hand, and looked at it. The D was gone, he was safe. "Because now, I don't have to be afraid anymore..." He smirked. "All I wanted were some answers brotha'....I didn't mean any real harm to ya or ya girlfriend over there." Dez motioned to Raine. "But James, if you kill me now, you'd be squandering your own honor. Not mine." He looked at James. He could feel something. A dark, shallow, deathly aura coming from James. "So far, you've done a good job with this girl, but you killing me, brotha' as far as I'm concerned that wouldn't be the best thing to tell her." Dez looked at Raine, and then back to James. "Oh James," said Dez, "I'm so sorry for what is going to happen to you soon..." Dez stood up and started to walk away. "I'll see you in anotha life...brotha."
